GOOG shares are up 40% YTD. The anti-trust overhang that we were concerned about for Google entering 2021 may not be much of an issue as it appears western Europe simply wants to levy a fine rather than make on the ground changes to the AI leader. A video summary of Google I/O is below.
- Advances in NLP ought to help significantly with productivity, especially regarding video search which has utility across consumer, enterprise and military use cases.
- Google’s TPU v4 AI chip doubles the processing power of its predecessor and is capable of processing an exaflop per second.
- Interestingly, Google continues to invest in doing more “on-device” which requires an enormous investment to shrink an app’s footprint. This enables Google to collect more information about the user in real-time (rather than in the cloud or at the edge of the network). Google’s digital dossier about a given person is that much more robust when said person uses a Google Pixel phone.
- A commercial-grade quantum computer within 10 years seems ambitious.
