Pinterest (PINS) has a problem: Google (GOOGL) is better at idea generation.
A search conducted on Google’s main page, on Google Images or on YouTube yields better results (my opinion) than does Pinterest. In addition, Google does not require that I set-up an account to perform those basic search functions.
- Google will always have better search results than Pinterest given that there are more people using the former, thereby ensuring that the underlying algorithms are better trained as compared to Pinterest’s search infrastructure.
- If Google enabled a “public” setting to Google Photos, it would immediately do grave damage to Pinterest. I don’t expect you will see that feature as Google is spending far more time and capital investing in YouTube (approx. 2.5 billion users), the preferred social platform amongst teenagers (Pew Research HERE).
- You will see more e-commerce/payments capability on Pinterest given that former PayPal and Google executive Bill Ready has been Pinterest CEO since June 2022.
