Apple’s New AR Headset Won’t Move The Needle But May Hurt Meta..

  • Apple’s new Vision Pro AR headset is a cool piece of hardware/software that is light years ahead of Meta’s Quest VR product line. However, at the end of the day Apple goes as the iPhone goes and AR devices won’t move the Revenue nor EPS needles for AAPL anytime soon.
  • High-end price point for Apple’s initial AR entry. With an initial price tag of $3,500, Apple’s Vision Pro won’t significantly dent Meta’s Quest sales when Vision Pro rolls out in 2024. However, Apple plans to roll out a lower cost version of Vision Pro and is already working on that headset. A lower-priced version of what I saw today could do Meta Quest sales harm.
  • I doubt that Meta will ever catch Apple from a feature, functionality perspective. Most Analyst commentary assumes that the Apple Vision Pro vs. Meta Quest war will eventually be fought on price. I disagree. I do not believe that Meta has the Software nor hardware chops to compete with Apple. The one thing that Apple still does better than any other Technology company is build devices where the software, chip architecture and hardware all work great together. Google is getting there with its Pixel, although it has a glass issue at the moment.
