Are Foldable Phones The Future?

I am not in the camp that believes AR/VR headsets will replace phones. However, it is easy to imagine a future where foldable phones such as Google’s Pixel Fold become commonplace.

  • The Pixel Fold has a 5.8 inch display that opens into a mid-sized tablet: The Pixel Fold is a smaller phone with a 5.8 inch display (versus a 6.1 inch display for the Pixel 7a, 6.3 inch display for the Pixel 7 and a 6.7 inch display for the Pixel 7 Pro). The Pixel Fold fits into your pocket and opens into a 7.6 inch tablet device which is great for viewing maps, images, video and text-based content.
  • Hinge technology: The hinge used to be a problem point for foldable phones as they would break or leave large gaps between the two sides of the phone once folded. The hinge is not a weak point for the Pixel Fold (the thinnest foldable phone on the market). The Pixel Fold does not leave space between sides once the device is folded.
  • Not cheap, but price points will come down over time. The Pixel Fold retails for $1,799.
